Project Update Roll-Up

I’d prefer to avoid writing constant updates about projects which are personal rather than global in nature (by “personal” I mean those which only directly involve me — currently, all of them). Don’tASQ is not about me but about us, and it’s important for readers to understand where that focus lies. Nevertheless, I also feel it’s important to keep you informed when I virtually disappear for a month without warning. In this roll-up, I address the status of all current and a couple of near-future projects — not to explain where I have been (though that will be answered), but to give you an idea of where we will be going.

  • Resolutions 2007: It’s not necessary to go into details since I’ll be writing a separate Resolutions update next week; long story short, I’ve been sidetracked for the short term, but the yearly goals are still well within reach. Once I’ve conquered polyphasic sleep (for the half-dozenth time), I’ll be implementing an organized way to keep track of just how many hours I spend in productivity. I also need to clarify the definition of “productivity” before going too far; don’t let me forget…
  • Polyphasic Sleep: At this point, it’s not a matter of how, but when; I’ve gotten to the point where I can easily become partially polyphasic (by which I mean 3-4 naps and a 3-4 hour “core” which includes being awakened every 20 minutes ;) ) for several days at a time. Once my summer co-op ends and the comparatively more flexible (but more full) college schedule begins, I’ll run another full adaptation. I’d like to be able to grab EEG recordings this time around, but I can’t make any promises…
  • Fitness: For all practical purposes, the Fitness project is undergoing reincarnation. I was dissatisfied with my recording methods, and wasn’t seeing strong results after the first couple of months. The next project (I’ll probably recreate it under a different name) will incorporate nutritional guidelines, better equipment and more detailed records. Expect its second coming no later than September, and probably August.
  • Write, Write, Write!: This project is dead, and it most likely won’t be coming back. :) A nice idea though it was, and despite having produced a few decent articles (and a few not-so-decent ones), the bottom line is that I don’t have time nor need to write on a daily basis. I’ve learned that I need to be in a certain type of mood to produce good pieces; when I’m not in that mood, sometimes my only option is to jot the idea on my whiteboard and come back another time.
  • Dream Machine: While I have (finally) succeeded in setting up the Macbook to quad-boot, I still have quite a bit of configuration to do with the Linux OS. The procedure is by no means straightforward, and admittedly more difficult and time-consuming than I expected it would be. Having said that, I won’t be able to write an “idiot-friendly” tutorial, though I will be writing a more general guide soon. Once this project is completed, a major hurdle will have been jumped and I may be able to return to more regular updates; reason being that I am relying on this laptop to assist in some of the planned future projects. Expect it to be completed within the next two weeks, with more information coming shortly after.
  • Master Chef: The name says it all, does it not? Will include lots of images and maybe a recipe or three. I unfortunately can’t put a timetable on this yet, but I figure that mentioning it here will make it more likely to come to fruition. ;)
  • Top Secret: This will be Don’tASQ’s first outwardly focused project, and the first of many. And yes, if you’re wondering, this is the exciting project which I’ve been hinting at for months (and originally wanted to launch in May…) I also wanted to launch it immediately after finishing the Dream Machine project, but there may be some delays due to the amount of planning I still need to put into this. With this being a global project, the cost of failure may be higher, so it needs to be done right the first time. I intend to reveal more, if not begin the project, by September.
