Change the World… Or Change Ourselves?

“The Wise adapts himself to the world. The Fool adapts the world to himself. Therefore, all progress depends on the Fool.” –Unknown

That must mean we crazy world-changers are just fools, right? ;)

In all seriousness, this is something I’ve grappled with on more than one occasion. It’s quite fantastic wanting to change the world and all of that jazz, but in exactly what ways should it be changed? It’s easy for me to point at a major global problem and say, “This is wrong. Let’s fix it.” Someone else, however, may see that problem as less serious than a different one — or not even a problem at all. How can I be so arrogant as to say that my perception of an ideal world is identical to the perception that others might hold? And how can we effectively improve the world when we might not even know what “improving” means?

The questions delve into the deepest crevasses of philosophy, and I have no answers to them. Perhaps someday I will.

You make a very good point! And, you are so right!! (In my opinion ;o)
It is rather hysterical when you think about the amount of people out there who want to change the world, make it a better place and a cleaner place while their very own little life, (little only in comparison to the whole world), suffers from these very things.
We are all individuals who enjoy different things. Maybe the world is just fine the way it is!!? It’s funny, as I am writing, I wonder why I have never entertained that idea before!? Wow, when you think about it, that makes a lot of sense. The world is fine. It is us who need to work on ourselves. When we learn to stop concerning ourselves with what everyone else is doing and stop trying to make them do everything the way WE think it should be done, we will feel less resistance. Instead of focusing on the negatives in our day, complaining about traffic and line-ups and begin to enjoy the clouds, the music, the opportunity for social interaction that can come from getting stuck in traffic, we will feel as though the world really isn’t doing that poorly after all. The World doesn’t need to be changed, the world is happy! It spins, it creates, it grows, it shrinks, it moves around…. it does it easily and effortlessly without worrying about what each and ever one of US is doing, thus we should start doing the same before we give Mr. Earth a complex!!
